Dishwasher Not Draining?
Here is What is Actually Going On (and What to Do About It)
You open the dishwasher expecting clean, dry dishes, and instead you are staring at an inch of cloudy water sitting in the bottom of the tub. Maybe there is a piece of lettuce floating in it. Maybe it smells a little off. Either way, your first thought is probably “great, now I need a new dishwasher.”
Take a breath. That is rarely the case.
I have been out to more of these service calls than I can count, and the honest truth is that nine times out of ten, a dishwasher that would not drain is not dying it is just blocked somewhere along its path, or something small got missed during an install. The trick is knowing where to look, and in what order, instead of poking around randomly or immediately assuming the worst. So let’s walk through this the way I actually would if I were standing in your kitchen with a flashlight.
How the Water Is Even Supposed to Leave in the First Place
It helps to understand what is supposed to happen before you go hunting for what is going wrong. During the wash cycle, water circulates around inside the tub to clean everything. When the cycle gets to the drain portion, the control board tells the drain pump to kick on. That pump pushes the wastewater out through a rubber hose, and depending on how your kitchen is set up, that hose runs to one of a few places a garbage disposal, a direct sink drain connection, or an air gap (that little chrome cylinder you sometimes see next to the faucet).
Somewhere along that path, there is also usually a loop or an air gap built in specifically to stop water from flowing backward into the dishwasher once it is out. If any single link in that chain gets blocked, kinked, or was never hooked up correctly to begin with, water has nowhere to go and it just sits there. Once you picture that whole path, troubleshooting gets a lot less mysterious. You are basically just checking each stop along the route.
Step One: The Filter (Seriously, Start Here)
I cannot stress this enough check the filter before you do anything else. It is the single most common cause of standing water, and it’s also the easiest thing on this entire list to fix yourself. Most dishwashers from the last ten or fifteen years have a removable filter sitting at the bottom of the tub, usually right under where the lower spray arm sits. It typically has a little handle or a twist lock mechanism. Pull out your bottom rack, find it, and give it a turn to release it check your owner’s manual if you’re not sure, because every brand does the release mechanism a little differently.
Once it is out, take a good look at it. If you have never cleaned it before, do not be shocked if it is coated in a layer of grease and food debris that looks like something out of a horror movie. That is completely normal for a filter that is gone unattended. Rinse it thoroughly under warm water and use an old toothbrush to work loose anything stuck in the mesh.
While the filter’s out, shine a flashlight down into the opening it came from. This is where you will often spot the real problem a piece of glass, a broken toothpick, a bit of eggshell, whatever managed to sneak past. Clean that area out too before you reinstall the filter. Symptoms that usually point to a clogged filter include standing water, slower than normal draining, dishes that come out dirtier than they should be, cloudy water sitting in the tub, or a faint bad smell when you open the door. If you clean the filter and run another cycle and the problem’s gone, congratulations that was the whole issue, and now you know to do this every month or so going forward.
Step Two: Check Around the Sump for Debris
Cleaning the filter does not always catch everything. Right around where the filter sits an area called the sump food particles and other debris can accumulate. I have pulled out rice, pasta, chicken bones, vegetable peels, bottle caps, plastic wrap, and more than a few pieces of broken glass over the years. Use your flashlight and take a careful look. If you see something you can reach safely, remove it by hand or with tongs. If it is broken glass, be extremely careful better to use tongs or a shop vac than your bare fingers. And if whatever’s in there looks like it is actually inside the pump housing rather than just sitting loose in the sump, do not force your hand in after it. That is when you call someone, both for your own safety and to avoid damaging the pump further.
Step Three: Inspect the Drain Hose
The hose that carries wastewater away from the dishwasher can get kinked, pinched, or crushed usually after the dishwasher’s been pulled out for some other repair, or after someone’s been working under the sink and shoved things around without paying attention to where the hose ended up.
Open the cabinet under your sink and trace the hose visually. Look for any spot where it is bent at a sharp angle, pressed against something heavy, or twisted in a way that would restrict water flow. If you recently had any plumbing work done, or moved the dishwasher for any reason, this is honestly the first place I would check. A partially blocked hose might let the dishwasher drain, just slowly you will notice water sitting for a while before it eventually clears, or draining sounds that seem to go on longer than usual. A fully blocked hose means the water’s just not going anywhere.
Step Four: The Garbage Disposal Connection
A lot of dishwashers route their wastewater through the garbage disposal rather than a direct line to the sink drain. If the disposal itself is clogged, the dishwasher has no path out. Try running the disposal on its own. If it is struggling or backing up, that is likely contributing to or entirely causing your dishwasher drainage problem. Clear the disposal clog first, then run another dishwasher cycle and see if things improve.
Here is the one I really want you to pay attention to, though, especially if your garbage disposal was replaced or newly installed recently: most new disposals ship with a knockout plug still in the dishwasher inlet, and it has to be manually removed before the dishwasher hose is connected. If whoever installed the disposal forgot that step and it happens more often than you would expect, even with professionals the dishwasher will run through its entire cycle completely normally. It will fill, wash, and attempt to drain, and the water will just have nowhere to go, because the inlet is sealed off.
I have been called out for this exact scenario more times than I can count. Brand new disposal goes in, and within a day or two the homeowner notices the dishwasher is not draining, assumes the dishwasher itself broke, and calls for a repair only for it to turn out to be a five minute fix once we knock that little plug loose. If your dishwasher stopped draining right around the time you had disposal work done, put this at the top of your list.
Step Five: The Air Gap
Not every kitchen has one, but if yours does, you will recognize it as a small chrome or plastic cylinder sitting next to the faucet, usually about two inches tall. Its whole job is to prevent contaminated water from siphoning backward into your dishwasher.
If it clogs, you might see water bubbling or spilling out of the top of it while the dishwasher runs, or you will notice slow drainage along with some food debris sitting around its base. Pop the cap off it usually just lifts or twists and check the hoses connected underneath for buildup. This one gets overlooked a lot because most people genuinely don’t know what that little cap is for until something goes wrong.
Step Six: Listen to What the Pump Is Doing
Run a cycle and pay close attention during what should be the drain portion. A healthy drain pump has a fairly distinct whirring or churning sound while it is actively moving water out.
If instead you hear a hum with no actual drainage happening, that often points to an obstruction around the impeller something’s blocking it from spinning freely, or debris has wedged its way into the pump housing. It can also mean the pump itself is on its way out and just does not have enough force left to move water anymore. Sound alone can not tell you which of those two is happening, so I would not go straight to ordering a replacement pump based on a hum by itself.
If you hear grinding, stop the cycle. That is usually a sign something solid glass, a bone fragment, a broken utensil piece has gotten into the pump and is actively getting chewed up in there. Letting it keep running can turn a simple clean out into a pump replacement.
Step Seven: Do not Overlook a Faulty Check Valve
Some dishwashers use a small check valve as part of the drainage system, designed to keep water from flowing back into the tub once it is been pumped out. If that valve sticks, gets damaged, or becomes obstructed, drainage can turn inconsistent draining fine one cycle, then leaving standing water the next, or water that appears to drain and then slowly creeps back in. This one’s harder to diagnose without pulling the dishwasher partially apart, so if you’ve ruled out the filter, hose, disposal, and air gap and you’re still seeing intermittent drainage, a bad check valve is worth having a technician check.
Step Eight: Rule Out Your Home’s Plumbing
If your kitchen sink is also draining slowly, gurgling, or backing up whenever the dishwasher runs, the issue might have nothing to do with the dishwasher at all. It could be sitting downstream in your household plumbing a clogged drainpipe that both fixtures share.
In that case, you can clean every filter and hose in the dishwasher and it would not matter, because the blockage is further along the line. If multiple fixtures in your kitchen are acting up together, that is a plumbing problem, not an appliance one, and it is worth calling a plumber rather than continuing to troubleshoot the dishwasher itself.
Too Much Soap Causes This More Often Than You would Think
If you have ever grabbed the wrong bottle and used regular dish soap instead of dishwasher detergent, you already know exactly what happens suds everywhere, sometimes leaking out from under the door. Even with the correct detergent, using too much of it can create excess suds that interfere with normal operation and contribute to drainage issues. Stick to detergent formulated specifically for dishwashers, and do not overdo the amount even then. More soap does not mean cleaner dishes; it usually just means more problems.
What to Do With an Error Code
Modern dishwashers keep an eye on water levels, pump activity, and a handful of other functions, and when something is off, they will usually flash a code at you. The problem is that codes do not mean the same thing across brands, so do not try to troubleshoot based on something you half remember from a different dishwasher you owned years ago.
Write the code down exactly as it appears, note your model number, and look it up in your manufacturer’s documentation. As one example, Whirlpool identifies the code F9E1 as a long drain or not draining condition, and their own troubleshooting steps walk through checking the filter, drain hose, disposer connection, and air gap basically the same list we just went through, in roughly the same order.
Is Some Standing Water Actually Normal?
Sometimes, yes. A number of dishwasher models are designed to retain a small amount of water around the sump or filter area on purpose it helps keep the seal from drying out. GE Appliances specifically notes that the expected amount varies depending on the model and filter design.
The distinction is between a thin film of water in one specific spot versus water covering the entire bottom of the tub. If you are not sure which one you are looking at, compare it against your owner’s manual rather than assuming every bit of moisture means something’s broken.
Please, Do not Reach for Drain Cleaner
I get this question a lot, and the answer is consistently no do not pour Drano or any other chemical drain opener into your dishwasher unless the manufacturer specifically tells you to use a particular product. Both GE Appliances and Whirlpool warn against this directly. Dishwasher components simply are not built to handle those chemicals the way plumbing pipes are, and you can end up damaging seals, hoses, or the pump itself. If you think there is a blockage, your energy is better spent finding exactly where it is instead of dumping chemicals into the appliance and hoping for the best.
When It is Time to Stop Troubleshooting and Call Someone
I am generally in favour of people trying the basic stuff themselves cleaning a filter or clearing visible debris is not dangerous and it is often all that is needed. But there is a clear point where continuing on your own stops making sense. Call a technician if:
- You have already checked the filter, hose, disposal connection, and air gap, and the dishwasher still is not draining.
- The pump is not making any noise at all when it should be running.
- You are hearing grinding coming from the pump area.
- There is a burning smell, visible sparking, or damaged wiring anywhere.
- The breaker keeps tripping when the dishwasher runs.
- Water is leaking out onto your kitchen floor.
- You’re staring at a drain error code that basic checks have not resolved.
None of that is worth pushing through solo. Electrical components and internal parts carry real risk if you are not familiar with them, and the cost of a service call is a lot cheaper than the cost of making things worse.
Repair or Just Replace It?
This really comes down to the age and overall condition of the machine. If your dishwasher is a few years old, has otherwise been running fine, and the problem turns out to be something like a clogged filter, a cheap hose, or a worn check valve, repairing it is a pretty easy call those parts are not expensive and the labour is usually straightforward.
If the dishwasher is older, has needed multiple repairs already, or the estimate for fixing it is creeping up toward what a comparable new unit costs, replacement starts to make more financial sense. It is not a decision to make blind, though a technician looking at the actual failed component can give you real numbers, which is a lot more useful than guessing based on the age of the appliance alone.
A Bit of Prevention Goes a Long Way
Almost every drainage call I go on could have been avoided, or at least delayed significantly, with a little routine maintenance. None of this takes much time:
- Clean the filter on a regular schedule once a month is a solid habit if you are cooking and washing dishes frequently.
- Scrape big chunks of food off plates before loading them (you do not need to fully pre rinse, just get rid of the obvious stuff).
- Use detergent made specifically for dishwashers, and do not overdo the amount.
- Do not overload the racks to the point where water can not circulate freely.
- Occasionally shine a flashlight into the bottom of the tub just to check for anything sitting around.
- If your drainage starts getting gradually slower over a few cycles, deal with it early a partial blockage is a lot easier to fix than a complete one.
- After any plumbing work under the sink or a new disposal install, check the dishwasher hose and inlet connection before you assume everything’s fine.
A Real Example, Because It Might Sound Familiar
A homeowner called us a while back after noticing standing water in the dishwasher after every single cycle, no exceptions. They would already cleaned the filter it was spotless when we got there. On inspection, though, we found the actual restriction was further down the drainage path, not at the filter at all. Once that was cleared, the dishwasher went right back to draining normally, no parts needed. I bring that up because it is a good illustration of why starting with the filter matters, but also why it is not always the end of the story. Sometimes the obvious fix is not the actual fix, and that’s exactly the kind of thing a second set of eyes is useful for.
If you have worked through everything here filter, sump, hose, disposal, air gap, listened to the pump, ruled out your home’s plumbing and you are still finding water sitting in the bottom of your dishwasher, it is a good time to bring in a technician. Sometimes it really is just that one clogged filter you had not gotten around to cleaning yet. Other times it is a pump on its way out, or a control board issue that no amount of at home troubleshooting is going to solve. Either way, getting an actual diagnosis beats replacing parts one at a time and hoping something sticks.
